Crayfish

KIND OF ANIMAL: Crustacean


FOOD
Crayfish eat snails.
They eat algae.
Algae is the green stuff you see on the side of a fish tank.
It is a kind of plant food.
Crayfish eat insect larvae.
Larvae are baby insects that look like little worms.
Crayfish also like to munch on worms, tadpoles and water plants.

ENEMIES
Birds eat crayfish.
Otters, muskrats, and raccoons think crayfish are a treat.
Turtles, frogs and snakes also eat crayfish. Humans love to eat them, too!

WHERE THEY LIVE
Crayfish live in streams.
They live in rivers and lakes.

 

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Crayfish look like lobsters. But they are about the size of a hot dog. A lobster is about the size of three hot dogs.
  • Crayfish have two big, sharp claws. They have long feelers called antennae. Their eyes are on the end of stalks that stick out from their head.
  • A crayfish’s bones are on the outside of its body. This helps keep the crayfish safe.
  • Crayfish have very hard shells. Animals love to eat them anyway. Many humans think a meal of crayfish is really yummy.
