FOOD
These flies eat blood from animals
and people.
The male fly eats pollen, the yellow dust you find in flowers.
They drink nectar, the sugar water that flowers make.

ENEMIES
Bzzz! Bzzz! These flies are everywhere! That’s why humans don’t like them very much. Lots of birds also eat deer flies and
horse flies.

WHERE THEY LIVE
Deer flies and horse flies live in the woods and on farms.
You will see them in grassy places, swamps, beaches and parks.

 

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Most people don’t like deer flies and horse flies.
  • Their bites hurt. They spread germs.
  • Only female flies suck blood.
  • Deer flies and black flies like hot weather the best. This is when you will see them most.
  • They bite a lot in the daytime.
