Eastern Newt

KIND OF ANIMAL: Amphibian


FOOD
Newts eat worms.
They eat small water animals.
They also eat larvae.
Larvae are baby insects.
They look a lot like worms.

ENEMIES
Frogs, fish, and snakes all like to eat newts.
Some big birds like to eat them too.
So do weasels, otters, and muskrats.

WHERE THEY LIVE
Newts live in the forest.
They live near lakes and rivers.
They need to be where it is wet.

 

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Baby newts hatch from eggs. They live in the water.
  • After a while, newts crawl onto the land. They turn red with spots. They stay on land for a few years.
  • When they are all grown up, they turn a dark color. Their tails get bigger. Then they go back and live in the water.
