They eat slugs, snails and worms.
They eat insects.
We don’t know what grown-up fireflies eat. |

People love to look for fireflies in
the summer.
They put them in jars to watch them light up. Fireflies like to be outside, not in jars. |

WHERE THEY LIVE
Fireflies light up swamps.
They like damp, wet places in the woods, parks and yards. |

DID YOU KNOW?
- Fireflies are beetles. They are not flies.
- Male fireflies light up. Their lights are a big
help.
- They tell hungry birds to stay away. They let
female fireflies know that they are looking for a girlfriend.
- Most birds stay away from fireflies when it’s
time to eat. The chemical that makes them light up tastes bad and is poisonous.
