Gypsy Moth

KIND OF ANIMAL: Insect

FOOD
Gypsy moths eat the leaves of many plants. They like the leaves from oak and aspen trees the very best.

ENEMIES
Deer mice and shrews love to munch on
gypsy moths.
So do some caterpillars and beetle larvae. Beetle larvae are baby beetles.
They look like little worms.

WHERE THEY LIVE
Gypsy moths live in forests. They may also live in parks.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • There used to be no gypsy moths in the United States. They were brought here by mistake. Since then, they have become big pests. They have eaten many, many trees.
  • Many birds eat caterpillars. But they don’t like to eat gypsy moth caterpillars. Gypsy moth caterpillars are too hairy!
