Lemming

KIND OF ANIMAL: Mammal

FOOD
Lemmings eat moss and grass.
They eat lichen.
Lichen grows on rocks, trees and logs.
Most lichen is a gray-green color.

ENEMIES
Hawks and owls hunt for lemmings.
So do weasels and foxes.
Some snakes eat them too.

WHERE THEY LIVE
Lemmings live in damp forests and in
bushy places.
They also live in orchards, where farmers grow fruit.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Lemmings are small and plump. They belong to the rodent family. Mice, rats, rabbits, and squirrels are rodents too.
  • Like most rodents, lemmings have lots of babies.
  • In the winter, lemmings dig tunnels under the snow. The lemmings use the tunnels to hide from hungry animals that want to eat them.
