Monarch Butterfly

FOOD
Young monarch butterflies are caterpillars. They eat milkweed.
Grown-up butterflies look for sap, juices, dew and nectar.
Nectar is the sugar water that flowers make.

ENEMIES
Humans hurt monarch butterflies when they cut down trees and use the land to build houses.
The butterflies lose their homes.

WHERE THEY LIVE
Butterflies live in fields and near the woods. They also like open spaces and parks.

  • You have probably seen a monarch butterfly. They have bright orange and black wings.
  • Monarchs aren’t just pretty. They travel many miles to Mexico when it is time to mate. They spend the winter there.
