KIND OF ANIMAL: Bird

FOOD
The nuthatch looks for insects in the trees. It eats hazelnuts, acorns and pine nuts.
It also eats small animals that don’t have backbones, like snails or worms.

ENEMIES
Owls and hawks hunt for nuthatches.
So do weasels and foxes.

WHERE THEY LIVE
Nuthatches live in different kinds of trees and wooded places.
They also live in parks.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Nuthatches get their name because they are so good at cracking open nuts. They use their beaks as hammers.
  • You can spot a nuthatch right away because they climb down trees head first. This is why some people call them “upside-down birds.”
  • Nuthatches are good at catching insects even when they are running or flying!
