KIND OF ANIMAL: Bird

FOOD
Peregrine falcons are meat-eaters.
They eat other birds like pigeons, gulls
and ducks.
They eat small animals like mice.
They eat lizards and insects.

ENEMIES
Humans have hurt peregrine falcons.
They once used bug sprays that killed bugs. But when the falcons ate these bugs, it put the chemicals in the falcons’ bodies.

WHERE THEY LIVE
Peregrine falcons glide above mountains and river valleys.
You will also find them over cliffs and near the sea.
Some peregrine falcons make their homes
on the tops of skyscrapers.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • The word “peregrine” means wanderer.
  • The peregrine falcon is a very fast bird. It can dive at a speed of up to 250 miles per hour.
  • There were once very few peregrine falcons left. There still aren’t very many, but laws protect them now. Many peregrine falcons were hurt because when bug sprays got into their bodies, it made their egg shells soft. Many babies could not hatch.
