Pillbug

KIND OF ANIMAL: Crustacean

FOOD
Pillbugs eat things they find in the soil. They eat old, dead plants and animals.
They even eat the bits of food in poop.

ENEMIES
Birds eat pillbugs.
Frogs and toads eat them too.
So do snakes and lizards.
Even some small mammals eat pillbugs.

WHERE THEY LIVE
Pillbugs love damp places.
They live under things.
If you lift a log or rock, you may see pillbugs.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Some people call pillbugs “roly-polys.” If you poke a pillbug (gently please), it will curl up into a ball. It looks like a pill.
  • Most animals that live on land use lungs to breathe, like you do. Pillbugs have no lungs. They have gills, like fish! If they get too dry, they will die.
