Red Rat (Corn) Snake

KIND OF ANIMAL: Reptile


FOOD
These snakes eat fish and frogs.
They like mice and other small mammals. They also eat insects.

ENEMIES
Humans don’t like rat snakes very much. They look a lot like the copperhead snake. The copperhead is poisonous.
Rat snakes are not poisonous.
They are very gentle.

WHERE THEY LIVE
Rat snakes live in fields and on farms.
You may find them in the woods.
They also sometimes live in empty buildings.

 

DID YOU KNOW?
  • People don’t agree on how the rat snake got its name. Some people say their colors look like Indian corn. Other people think they got their name because they like to hide in corn fields. There are lots of yummy little mice to eat there.
  • Corn snakes are not mean snakes. People get them mixed up with the copperhead snake. The copperhead is very poisonous.
  • Some people think corn snakes are very nice. They keep them as pets.
