Garter Snake

FOOD
Garter snakes hunt for frogs, toads
and fish.
They also eat insects and earthworms.

ENEMIES
Owls and hawks like to swoop down on garter snakes and eat them.
Other snakes eat them, too.

WHERE THEY LIVE
Garter snakes slide through forests
and fields.
They live near ponds and streams.
You may spot a garter snake in a park.

  • Garter snakes like to lie in the sun. Look for one on a rock or by a pool.
  • Have you seen a snake in the park? It was probably a garter snake.
  • The garter snake has a long stripe that runs down the middle of its back.
  • Lots of people like to keep garter snakes as pets.
  • Ribbon snakes look a lot like garter snakes. They are longer and thinner. They like to hang out by water.
