Great Horned Owl

KIND OF ANIMAL: Bird

FOOD
Great horned owls are good hunters.
They love to eat mice and rabbits.
They eat other small mammals, too.

ENEMIES
Great horned owls sometimes fight with crows and jays the way cats fight with dogs. The crows and jays think the owl is going to hurt their babies or try and take over their homes.

WHERE THEY LIVE
Great horned owls live in forests.
You can find them in grasslands, deserts, and canyons.
They also live near hills and houses.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • The great horned owl has feathers on its ears that look like horns. That’s why some people call it the cat owl or the tiger owl.
  • Owls don’t move their eyes the way humans do.
  • They have to turn their heads from side to side to see what’s going on around them. They can turn their heads very fast.
