KIND OF ANIMAL: Bird

FOOD
Wood ducks eat small water animals
and plants.
They eat insects.
They eat fruit, and nuts, and seeds.

ENEMIES
Large meat-eating birds hunt for ducks. People do too.

WHERE THEY LIVE
Wood ducks live near rivers and on the shores of lakes and ponds.
They live in marshes and swamps in the forest.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Wood ducks build their nests in hollow trees. They build them very, very high off the ground. When the baby ducks are less than one day old, the mother duck leaves the nest. She sits on the ground and calls them. The babies jump from the high nest all the way to the ground. They are so light, they don’t get hurt. Then they follow her to the water.
