DESCRIPTION
Cicadas spend most of their lives as nymphs. When
they hatch, they dig holes in the ground. They live there for at least two years, feeding
on sap from plant roots. Then they tunnel to the surface, climb a tree or other tall
object, and change into adults.
Grown up cicadas are large flying insects. Their
wings are transparent and look a little like plastic wrap. The males sing a loud buzzing
song to attract females.
There are many different kinds of cicadas. There is
one kind that comes up from underground every 13 years and another that comes up every 17
years!
