DESCRIPTION
  • The downy woodpecker is the most common woodpecker in the U.S.
  • The downy woodpecker is known for its habit of hammering away at trees in search of insects and grubs. Its body is adapted to this job. Its beak is like a chisel. It has stiff feathers in its tail to help it balance as it clings to a tree trunk with its toes.
