  • The newt has an unusual life cycle. The larvae have gills and live in water. They then become the familiar red color and move on to land where they spend two or three years. They slowly turn greenish-brown, their tails broaden, and they return to the water. There they reproduce and live out their lives.
  • The eastern newt is also called the red-spotted newt because during the middle stage of its life it is decorated with bright red spots.
