DESCRIPTION
  • Grouse are large birds, with the smallest ones about the size of chickens and the largest similar in size to turkeys.
  • Spruce grouse are also known as “Fool Hens” because they are completely unafraid of humans, including hunters. They ended up on so many dinner tables that they are now a protected species.
  • The ruffed grouse has a little peak on its head. When it’s mating season, the male does a drumming dance on a hollow log to attract a female.
  • A grouse's legs and feet are covered with feathers to protect them from the cold.
