Although it is a protected species in some places,
in much of North America there are plenty of mourning doves. This is because a mother dove
may raise as many as five sets of babies each year. They may build their nests on the
ground or in trees.
Mourning doves are popular birds to hunt in many
states.
Most birds need to tip their heads back to swallow
water, but a mourning dove can sip it up through its beak.
