DESCRIPTION
  • The belted kingfisher is on the back of the Canadian $5 bill.
  • When fishing, the kingfisher often hovers before diving into the water to catch a fish. It often takes fish that it has caught, thumps it on its perch, tosses it into the air, then catches and swallows it.
  • Kingfishers have an unusual nest. They use their shovel-shaped beaks to dig a long tunnel into a bank which ends in a nesting chamber.
  • There are members of the kingfisher family world wide.
