Most of the time earthworms live their lives out of
sight. They dig underground tunnels and come up only at night to feed. This is why they
are sometimes called night-crawlers.
Earthworms were brought to North America by
settlers from Europe.
They have been very successful here!
Earthworms help forests, farms and gardens. They
break down the bits of dead plant and animal matter in the soil so that the nutrients can
be recycled. This makes the soil more fertile and helps plants grow.
