DESCRIPTION
  • The male red-winged blackbird has a flashy look. The female is a dull, streaky brown which blends in perfectly with the cattails and grasses where she may nest and raise her babies.
  • The male’s bright wing patches help him to defend his territory from other birds.
  • Huge flocks of blackbirds gather in southern states during the winter. There they feed on grain.
