    October 17th - MICE

There have been mice on the trail, but not too bad. When you get into the shelters, they tell you watch out, hang up your food. In the shelters, they have a string hanging from the ceiling and they take a can of tuna fish or an empty can and put the string through a hole in the can. And then at the bottom of the string they have a peg, horizontally, so you can hang your pack on it. The reason is that mice are so agile they will climb the wall, they'll go along the ceiling, they'll go down the string, they will get up to your pack and into your food, but they can't because of the can. As they get to the metal, they slip off.

I've had little mice come around in the shelters. You can read in the logbooks in the shelters about mice in the sleeping bag and on your face. That hasn't happened yet, but who knows, we're only halfway there. We may still have that adventure.
