November 18th - Acorns |
When you're walking in the woods in the fall something fascinating happens. You keep thinking there are people or animals following you all the time, you keep hearing these sounds. The sounds are all around you. On the fallen leaves you hear crunch-klap-krik-klap-crak-crunch! You look around and don't see anybody. All around you there are these sounds. There are acorns dropping from the trees. All over the forest in Virginia where we were hiking there were fallen acorns. They are like carpeting so after a while you begin to walk on them. There are so many acorns. They come from oak trees, I think. I'm not sure. Now, who eats the acorns? Squirrels? What other animals eat acorns? Do human beings eat acorns? If humans eat acorns, what kind of recipes are they in? Is there acorn bread? Now you hear about bread made from acorn squash. But, acorn squash is a vegetable that's similar to a pumpkin. Acorns... can you use them to make cereal? Did Native Americans use acorns in their food? If so, how did they prepare them? Did they grind them up? Now, you can get chestnuts that fall from trees and brown them or roast them over a fire. After they are roasted they crack open and you can eat the nut inside. Can you do that with acorns? I don't know but I am very curious to try it out. Maybe somebody that's reading this tale can find out the answers to these questions. |
