November 30th - Colors ~ Part II |
As I was talking about color I remember something interesting. A few years ago, I was trying to explain the color gray to a child who had been blind from birth. I said gray is the color of a mouse. Oh, it's like the color of stones used to make some buildings. Well, it's like black and white mixed together. I said, gray is like when you are tired and depressed and there isn't sunlight. But, gray isn't always a sad color. There are beautiful shades of gray too. Grey isn't always depressing. Then, I realized hard it is to describe the color gray. How can you express color to a child who has been blind from birth? And, even more curious, how does a child who has not had eyesight from birth dream? Do blind children dream in pictures? Colors? Smells? Textures? Or, do they imagine pictures that we could never understand? Do they make up fantastic pictures in their mind based on their other senses? Are the imaginative creations of blind children different from sighted children? I have never been able to find out the answers to these questions. I wonder if you know the answer? |
