DESCRIPTION
  • The great horned owl is sometimes called the cat owl or the tiger owl because its large ear tufts look like horns. While they look impressive, the ear tufts are just for show.
  • Like all owls, they cannot move their eyes the way humans can. They make up for this by constantly turning their head to see what is going on around them. They can twist their heads very quickly.
  • Sometimes crows or jays will mob a great horned owl. Groups of the smaller birds will fly at the great horned owl. They seem to be natural enemies, somewhat like cats and dogs.
  • Great horned owls are swift and silent hunters, dropping out of the sky to snatch their prey. They swallow their prey, feathers, fur, bones and all. Later they regurgitate (throw up) pellets made of the parts they cannot digest.
