Student Worksheets

An important part of any nature study is to observe it firsthand. These sheets can be used in a variety of settings, whether an urban park, a suburban school yard, or a forest.

The first sheet is for recording a simple inventory. It is organized by whether the objects observed are natural or human made. It could be preceded by a class discussion of things which are natural vs. things which are human made.

The second worksheet is designed to help students learn from their observations by sharing them with each other and paying attention to details. It also sets the stage for a return trip to the study site and for further research.

The third sheet serves as a guide for the student to engage in a more focused study of one object in the field.

This is a variation on a classic lesson to practice your observation skills with apples.

To prepare for this activity you will need a variety of apples. You need enough to have one for each child and a few spares in case of injury.

NDI Step by Step is proud to be an official project partner of the White House Millennium Council. Our project falls under the Millennium Trails initiative which recognizes and celebrates our nation's trails. Millennium Trails is a national initiative designed to bring together diverse groups in support of trails and the shared experiences they represent. Trails are an important part of the American landscape, providing connections between people, land, history and culture. Jacques is "walking the walk" as he treks through one of the sixteen designated "National Millennium Trails" - The Appalachian Trail.

COMING SOON - Information and links on how you and your students can commemorate America's Millennium, a once-in-a-thousand years celebration which continues through January 1, 2001.
